NPJS Center for Research & Professional Development offers the convenience and affordability of computer-based training, while ensuring that new and pre-service careworkers receive personal attention from experienced staff. New employees can entirely complete the 24-hours of training using either compact disks or the Internet web site from their home or facility computer. Additionally, the program provides extensive personnel resources for administrators such as orientation checklists, emergency procedures, sample employee handbooks and forms. View slides of the actual course content. Computer. Training participants will receive content information using the computer in either one of two ways: by using the compact disk provided, or using the Internet web site with the access code provided. Participants receive instructions on their computer screen for completing lessons. This often includes reading text, viewing pictures, taking quizzes and doing on-line activities. Participants are encouraged to call Virtual University, Toll Free: 1-800-500-1554 (North America and Hawaii), or 517-355-2345, if they need assistance with technology or access problems.Mentor-Trainer. Agencies purchasing the Pre-Service On-Line Staff Training program must identify and assign a Mentor to work with participants. The mentor should be an experienced and trustworthy individual, preferably with training experience. The mentor will answer questions, acquaint the new employee to their facility, reinforce important concepts, and evaluate the new employee's understanding. Additional information and suggested activities are provided to the mentor in a 3-ring notebook binder. Mentors may want to reserve the second compact disk for their own use.Training participants should be able to complete the on-line portion of the training in approximately 24-hours. Estimated times are provided at the start of each lesson. These are listed below:
Additionally, time must be given for the mentor to work with the new employee after completion of each on-line lesson. The amount of time necessary will vary depending upon the complexity of the lesson, the participant's needs, and the demands of the facility. This portion of the program lends itself to the shadowing or on-the-job training model. Materials and Technical Requirements The availability of a mentor-trainer has already been covered. No additional reading materials are required to successfully complete this course, though some lessons give optional additional reading. Mentors in particular may want to order a copy of the Desktop Guide to Good Juvenile Detention Practice. Pre-Service training participants must have access to a computer with either compact disk reading capability (CD ROM) or Internet access. Mentors should also have access to either CD ROM or the Internet. To successfully complete the on-line component of the course, students are encouraged to meet the VU minimum equipment requirements beforehand.
